For some reason it feels really good to be mentioned in Timothy Appnel’s blog entry: MT was never open source so far. My blog has been validated by readers other than my own friends and family. Other people care to actually read it and then leave long comments too!

Anyway, for those wondering: Timothy Appnel writes a manual for Movable Type (a blogging tool like Blogspot, WordPress, TypePad), so he’s just defending his turf. And for good reason: I didn’t really do my homework about SixApart and the Movable Type open source vs. “closed source” debate. Then again, even with 2 years experience in the software industry, I still don’t know much about the difference between GPL and other licensing schemes. But I’m glad he does.

Kudos to everyone who slogged through his comment. If anything you learnt something: “MT was never open source so far”. But kudos to Timothy Appnel who actually read my last blog entry complaining about Movable Type.

  1. I’m always interested in what people think and do with MT so I can keep an informed and balanced view of the tool.

Sorry it went as long as it did. I just got going and … whoa! I’ll try not and do that again here, but I probably will since this is a topic I’ve been meaning to write about.

Over on my blog you left a comment quoting me about Six Apart has not being forgiven by many for the MT3 licensing communication gaff. I think perhaps you misunderstood what I meant about forgiveness. I am not suggesting that to forgive Six Apart means to move back to MT. Far from it. What I was referring to was the ongoing mostly baseless cheap shots and conspiracy theories (like these) about every move the company makes.

I know I read another post somewhere stating that Six Apart’s commitment to GPL MT was because they where abandoning further development. That is ridiculous because there has been more activity and development in the past 6-9 months then any other time in the development of MT.

To be clear Ben I am not accusing you of any of this. You’re helping your sister, you know WordPress well (and presumably some PHP) well so it’s understandable that you would make that switch for her.

Wow. Some people are so passionate about technology. You guys could start a new political party.

  3. Well there’s the “Green Party”. We’d be what? The “Technology Party”? Actually, it’d be just a LAN party instead of a technology party or a political party.

  4. WiFi party… if we’re keeping up with the times?

I need to accelerate upgrading to MT 4. I can’t edit my blog posts via the web - the “Save” button doesn’t work - gives Javascript errors. I have to use my ScribeFire to post and edit my posts!
